Making Tax Digital (MTD) is the biggest change to the way tax returns work in a generation. VAT registered businesses have been keeping digital records for some time, and now Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has arrived for the self-employed and landlords.
Since 6 April 2026, anyone with combined income from self-employment and property of more than £50,000 has needed to keep digital records and send HMRC an update every quarter, followed by a final tax return at the end of the year. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and is expected to fall to £20,000 from April 2028, so many more people will be brought in over the next couple of years.
It doesn’t need to be a headache. I can check whether and when MTD applies to you, help you choose software that suits the way you work, whether that’s Xero, QuickBooks, Sage or a simple app on your phone, and get you signed up. From there, I can submit your quarterly updates and prepare your year end return, so you can get on with running your business.
If you’d rather keep on top of your own bookkeeping, I can simply check your figures before each submission. Either way, you will have someone on hand to answer your questions throughout the year.
